To become a Canadian Citizen, you must file an application for Citizenship proving that you have resided in Canada for a minimum of three years out of the last five years prior to submitting your application to the government. The rule of being in Canada for 3 out of the last 5 years may be less, but this is subject to having worked or studied in Canada prior to obtaining Permanent Residence. The maximum credit the government will give is one year based on a formula used to arrive at the one year maximum. Therefore, in limited circumstances, it might be possible to apply for Citizenship after 2 years as a Permanent Resident.
